Journey Pastor Chris Ruppe and Comedian Marty Simpson will be performing at a night of comedy to support the Metrolina Adoption Fund (MAF) at the Charlotte Comedy Zone on July 30 at 6 p.m.
Adoption is a cause close to Chris’ heart. He and his wife, Holly, have worked with children’s homes, supported adoption, and even adopted a child of their own.
“One of the things we learned when we were adopting is that it is expensive,” Chris said.
Recently, the Ruppes partnered with Lifesong for Orphans to create the MAF, which provides financial aid and support to families looking to adopt. All proceeds from Cracking Up For Adoption, including tickets, donations and a silent auction, will go directly to providing grants and no-interest loans to Metrolina-area families in the process of adoption.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, there are more than 400,000 children in the American foster care system, with over 100,000 awaiting adoption. 20,000 youths age-out of the system each year, fewer than half of which are employed by the age of 26, and most do not earn a living wage, according to a study by the University of Chicago.
“No kid should have to stay in foster care,” Chris said. “It’s not something we can just ignore.”
Lifepointe is partnering with MAF out of the church’s commitment to paint a picture of the Gospel through fostering and adoption. As believers, we have been adopted by God, and He has called us to care for widows and orphans.
“Some of us need to adopt, some need to help pay for adoption, and others need to create an environment of support,” Chris said. Having others willing to provide occasional child care, food and resources, makes it easier for these families and creates a more comfortable and stable environment for children.
This is the vision behind Lifepointe’s own Adoption and Foster Care LifeLine. Children’s Pastor Emilee Siemon is providing opportunities to support and encourage fostering and adoptive families. Our Family Gatherings are designed to connect these families who share similar experiences, and the next opportunity will be on August 13th.
In addition to raising funds, Cracking Up For Adoption will be the official comedic debut of Pastor Chris, and also feature 2012 Clean Comedy Challenge Winner Marty Simpson, who has performed on ESPN, BET, and Saturday Night Live.
“I’ve always liked making people laugh, so this night is going to be one more thing off my bucket list,” Chris said.
Tickets are on sale now for as little as $10 per person through the Charlotte Comedy Zone. For more information on how you can support this event and adoption, visit these pages:
